New consumer sentiment data slides while market and tariff pressures ease

The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research released its latest monthly survey of economic sentiment today. Their Index of Consumer Sentiment, which measures the difference between the number of Americans who answer favorably versus unfavorably to a long list of questions about economic conditions, hit 50.8 for May, the lowest level since 2022 and even worse than the levels during the pandemic.
