I read the Milbank column. Of course, the policy ideas are fine, if thin on non-citizens' status, protections, and rights. Non-reribution overall makes sense as it would create strong grounds for yo-yoing of the government as parties in power changed. But governing by executive fiat on the pattern Trump and SCOTUS have established is a chilling prospect. The prospect of the only coceivable check on the executive--congress having to override another deranged president to avoid instantaneous, devastating changes in policies--is scary as well
I agree that governance by executive fiat is non desirable.
But what if the American people decide that they like having many of their policy preferences finally MET?
We know there are supermajorities that support policies that Congress never passes because they are afraid of alienating their big campaign donors.
"But what if these progressive ideas caught fire? What if the American public decided that all these government interventions in the market were cutting the cost of health care, groceries, energy and banking while pushing up wages? A future Republican president might have trouble reversing them."
If nothing else, it makes for an exquisitely-timed threat.
The one thing we know for sure is that our "normal" is gone.
Until someone can show a path to getting 67 votes for conviction in the US Senate talk of impeachment is largely performative. Other than wasting time that could be put to better uses it really serves no purpose. We absolutely need accountability for this regime but impeachment is probably not the tool to make that happen.

With Trump and his right-wing media echo chamber working overtime to build an alternative reality, it's encouraging to get data showing that the rest of us aren't crazy or off base. Your polling and analysis show that on a number of issues but it's good to have that grounding on impeachment, too.

If (IF) we all get out and vote in Hungarian-level numbers this November, it should be a clarion call to Congress that we are not amused by their past performance.
I still think that impeachment would be a pyrrhic victory, and would give MAGA reasons to push back at the "persecution" of their cult leader.
Better to pass legislation that will draw a clear contrast between Democratic and Republican leadership.
Reverse the tariffs, resurrect the ACA subsidies, LOUDLY restore the Medicaid cuts, force the full release of the Epstein files. That should give voters clear and compelling reasons to keep Dems in office in 2028.
Then beat the drum for overturning Citizens United. Highlight the obscene amounts of money that billionaires and corporate interests are wielding to take over our government. The time is right to pull the trigger on We the People taking back power.
Not nearly enough to drive a successful impeachment, and no movement since April. The opposition needs to focus on other initiatives.

It always amazes me how many people seem to not understand the impeachment process even though it’s very specifically detailed in the Constitution.
