I am intrigued by your comment to be wary about the numbers in the Leger polls, but unfortunately you do not explain why to be wary this poll, as opposed to other polls. I am wary of all poll numbers (which is why I like to read your posts). One issue that constantly irks me is the fact that polls characterize people as Republicans, Democrats or Independents. Do these polls inquire as to whether they have consistently characterized themselves with this moniker? Because, if not, a person who now calls themselves an Independent might have considered themselves a Republican in 2024 or 2020. It might be Trump's craziness and incompetence that pressed them into turning Independent. If so, then who is left to the category of Republican? Mainly those who continue to agree with Trump and his administration in some, most, or all of his agenda. Are they Republican, Conservative or actually MAGA, then?
You can do the same evaluation with respect to the term Democrats, and in particular those who were disaffected by the election, by the last administrations (in)action in Gaza and/or Ukraine, or other attempts to please a greater share of the population.
Who considers themselves what moniker is, in itself, something that fatally flaws most polls.
How far down can Trump's approval go? The economy was a big issue for many Trump voters, and it's only going to get worse for the average person. Nor does it look like there's any event, including a terrorist attack, that would reverse the downward trend in his approval. And his unpopularity seems to be increasing Democrats' chances of winning elections. Pretty clear that Trumplicans will have to cheat big time, to be able to keep power.
Time to pass the FRA and multi-member districts with proportional RCV.
Well yes but I don’t think ranked choice voting is that popular and I think it has problems of its own. I would love to hear your thoughts. But wouldn’t the independent districting commission be enough to get rid of gerrymandering? The other proposals in this bill are not as popular. At least that is my impression
Commissions will help but as long as there are single-member districts there will be a strong incentive to gerrymander. Plus they bring lots of other distortions (no Rep legislators from MA/Dems from MT eg, even though each smaller party is 35-40% of voters in those states).
Is anyone surveying or polling how Texans feel about this move? One of the few things that can kill a Trump- or GOP-directed cheat is the threat of losing their jobs.
I have lived in Texas for 25 years and I absolutely certain that gerrymandering will not turn off Texas voters. The Texas Senate acquitted attorney Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton when he was clearly guilty as hell, so partisanship reigns over all in Texas.
Our political leaders know the rules.......they are so low! Our 4 and 5 year olds just learning to share the soccer ball on the field or learning to listen to their neighbors at circle time are much better examples than the GOP peeps in Texas legislature-and elsewhere! As these young kids would say, "cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater!" Dang people! GROW UP and treat people, your neighbors, with the respect they deserve............. Do unto others....... What's good for the goose is good for the gander........that will only take you so far! Bring some honest and the ability to lose....GRACEFULLY back! You are adults! Not every one should get a participation trophy, but every voter should have their vote count, not stolen!
Your work is outstanding and this take on gerrymandering is particularly significant. The question is, how can we possibly convert this insight into a plausible endeavor to reverse the damage already done and prevent further escalation of its use? It appears the Democratic and Republican parties would rather commit political suicide than initiate a move to declare their respect for the voters by reversing this devious mechanism for subverting the Constitution's intent.
